Clinical
Risk Management
In response to the medical indemnity crisis and rising medical indemnity
subscriptions GPs have asked by insurers to submit clinical risk
management plans.
Risk management to many general practitioners is a new concept. It is
the term applied to the logical and systematic method of establishing
the context, evaluating, analysing, evaluating, treating, monitoring and
communicating risks associated with any activity that will enable
organisations to minimise loses and maximise opportunities. (AS/NZS
4360:1999) To
the general practitioner it is about minimising the possibility of a
complaint or legal action by having in place and using a variety of
systems and processes.
The risk
management principles are: -
- Identify all possible
important risks using a risk management process
- Ensure risk management
becomes a day to day activity in the practice
- Ensure staff know
about and use policies and procedures necessary to minimise and
manage risk
- Ensure employees are
aware of risks and how to manage them
- Assign accountability
for risk
- Monitor risk profile
and implement a continuous improvement approach to risk management
